WHAT TO EXPECT
(2009-04-28)
On Saturday, May 2nd, 2009, at the University of Regina Campus at 2201 College Ave., starting
at 9:00 a.m., the community is invited to celebrate comic art with a bilingual festival and conference.
There is no registration fee and all activities are open to the general public. Children under the
direction of Michele Sereda will perform a fashion show for comic characters. The MacKenzie
Art Gallery will be helping with a costume contest (winners get up to $100!) and providing
workshops for kids and adults. More workshops held by professionals will teach the craft and
business of being a comic book artist to anyone with the desire to learn. The winners of the
comic creation contests will be announced. There are four categories with prizes up to $200.
There will be an exhibition with works from local and international artists as well as all the
entries for the comic creation contest. Commercial and public exhibitors will be present. And a
cash barbecue, operated by the University of Regina Students' Union, will be open to the public.
Renowned European graphic novelists Vink, from Belgium, and François Ayroles, from France
will give an international appeal to the event, thanks to the Institut français and the Consulate of
France in Toronto. The Gabriel Dumont Institute will present their recent graphic novel: "Stories
of Our People". Academics from all across Canada as well as from the US will present papers on
various topics of comics, graphic novels and manga, which are accepted as legitimate forms of
literature and visual culture.
Leading up to the May 2nd event, five films based upon the comic books (the X-Men trilogy,
Akira, Astérix aux Jeux Olympiques) will be shown at the Regina Public Library on
Wednesdays, which are free to the general public. Also, Queen City Comics Quiz, with great
prizes, can be entered online at www.reginalibrary.ca/teenzone/.
