Le Language Institute Building s'appelle désormais La Cité
Le 28 mars 2019, le Language Institute Building sur le campus de l'Université de Regina est devenu La Cité. Ce changement de nom témoigne de la vitalité de la communauté fransaskoise et de l'engagement de l'Université de Regina envers l'éducation en français. La Cité est au cœur de la vie francophone sur le campus.
« Aujourd'hui, nous annonçons quelque chose qui aura pris 50 ans, qui remonte à la création, en 1968, du Centre d'études bilingues à l'Université, a déclaré madame Vianne Timmons, rectrice et vice-chancelière. Ce changement de nom n'est pas qu'un symbole, c'est un engagement tangible envers notre communauté fransaskoise, envers une province diverse, multiculturelle et multilingue, et envers nos étudiants qui méritent de recevoir une éducation postsecondaire en français, ici dans notre province. »
Selon Monsieur Emmanuel Aito, directeur de La Cité universitaire francophone, « renommer le Language Institute Building, La Cité est une réaffirmation réfléchie et tant espérée de la vocation du bâtiment. Il nous rappelle pertinemment la myriade d'activités en français pour lesquelles La Cité est un sanctuaire. Plus qu'un simple exercice linguistique symbolique, cet acte est éminemment socioculturel; il constitue un élément essentiel dans la construction acharnée d'un patrimoine francophone. Ce faisant, l'Université resserre, une fois de plus, ses liens avec la communauté fransaskoise et consolide ainsi un partenariat mutuellement bénéfique. »
Le désir de renommer le Language Institute Building résulte de la création de La Cité universitaire francophone en 2015. Cette unité universitaire, fruit de la fusion du Département de français et de l'Institut français, fonctionne comme toutes les autres facultés de l'Université.
Le nom La Cité est le résultat d'un processus entamé en 2017 par la création d'un comité chargé de renommer le bâtiment. Il consulte alors la communauté pour trouver un nom qui refléterait mieux l'utilisation et l'importance actuelles du bâtiment pour la communauté fransaskoise.
Le bâtiment abrite aussi le programme du Baccalauréat en éducation française (Le Bac). Assuré par la Faculté d'éducation, il forme à l'enseignement en français. En outre, on y trouve, aux étages supérieurs, La Résidence qui comprend Le Quartier francophone, un espace de vie et d'étude conçu tout spécialement pour les étudiants francophones et francophiles.
Construite en 1991, La Cité consiste en une base de deux étages et d'une tour d'habitation de six étages. Elle est située sur le campus principal de l'Université, au 3727, allée Sagittaire.

The Language Institute Building renamed La Cité
On March 28, 2019, the Language Institute Building on the University of Regina campus was renamed "La Cité". This change is a testament to the vitality of the Fransaskois community and the University of Regina's commitment to French-language education. La Cité is at the centre of Francophone life on campus.
"Today we are announcing something that has been 50 years in the making, as we can trace this moment back to 1968 and the creation of the Bilingual Studies Centre at the University," said Dr. Vianne Timmons, President and Vice-Chancellor. "Changing the name to La Cité is more than just symbolic; it is a tangible commitment to our Fransaskois community, to a province that is diverse, multicultural and multilingual, and to our students who deserve the opportunity to get a French-language post-secondary education right here in our province."
According to Dr. Emmanuel Aito, Director of La Cité universitaire francophone: "The renaming of the LI Building as La Cité is a thoughtful and longed-for reaffirmation of its purpose. It fitly reminds us of the myriad of French-language activities for which La Cité is a sanctuary. More than a mere symbolic linguistic exercise, this act is eminently sociocultural; it is a critical element in the unremitting construction of a Francophone heritage. So doing, the University once again draws the Fransaskois community closer to itself and into a mutually reinforcing partnership."
The desire to rename the Language Institute Building was identified following the creation of La Cité universitaire francophone in 2015. This academic unit, which resulted from the merging of the Department of French and the Institut français, functions like all other faculties at the University.
The name La Cité was the result of a process initiated in 2017 with the creation of a Building Renaming Committee, which sought community input on a new name to better reflect the current use and importance of this facility to the Fransaskois community.
The building is also home to the Baccalauréat en éducation française (Le Bac) program offered by the Faculty of Education, which provides French-language teacher education. In addition, the upper floors of the building houses La Résidence which includes Le Quartier francophone - a Living Learning Community specifically designed for French-speaking students.
Constructed in 1991, La Cité, consists of a two-storey base and six-storey residence tower above, and is located on the University's main campus at 3727 Sagittaire Lane.
