Journalist and military and Middle East historian Gwynne Dyer will deliver an up-to-the-minute analysis of these and other questions about the state of international affairs at a public lecture on Monday, March 3, 2003 at the University of Regina. Dyer’s presentation, titled “The New War and the World,” starts at 7:30 p.m. in the Education Auditorium. Everyone is welcome; parking is free in Section M of Lots 14, 15 & 17. The lecture is sponsored by the Faculty of Arts and the School of Journalism.
Dyer, who has studied at universities in Canada, the U.S. and the U.K., received his PhD in military and Middle Eastern history from the University of London. He served in the Canadian, American and British navies, and taught history and war studies at the Canadian Forces College in Toronto and Royal Military Academy in Sandhurst, England. Dyer has worked as a freelance journalist, broadcaster and journalist since 1973. His syndicated columns on international affairs have appeared in nearly 200 newspapers in more than 40 countries.
In 1983, Dyer collaborated on “War,” a seven-part television series for the National Film Board (NFB). It was broadcast in Canada and 45 countries and was followed by a book based on the series. He collaborated on the three-part series “Defence of Canada” for the NFB and the CBC, which aired in 1986. A subsequent book, The Defence of Canada: In the Arms of the Empire, was published in 1990. In 1994, he completed the four-part series “The Human Race” about the nature and future of human politics. In 1995, he completed a three-part series on peacekeeping in Bosnia, Protection Force. His radio documentaries include “The Gorbachev Revolution” and “Millennium.” A frequent lecturer, Dyer’s reflections on globalization and the nation-state were published in 1996 in the Canadian Institute of the International Affairs series, Behind the Headlines.
