A total of 240 Grade 8-10 students from 22 towns and cities will participate in the one-day enrichment, coaching and competition program that promotes math excellence.
MathCounts involves individual and team-based interaction and competition, plus an exciting one-on-one knockout round. Teachers and volunteers have been coaching student mathletes since the beginning of the school year as part of in-class instruction or as an extracurricular activity. In-school competitions were held to select four-member school teams to compete at the March 8 provincials, where team and individual champions will be crowned.
The event is being organized by the Saskatchewan Math Teachers Society (SMTS) and the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Regina. The event is funded by the SMTS and by the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, the Faculty of Science, and the Centre for Mathematics, Science & Technology in Education at the University of Regina. The material for the competitions was purchased from the MathCounts organization in the United States. MathCounts competitions were first developed in, and are held throughout the U.S.
