July Newsletter

Leah's First Day!

Firstly, let me say how excited I am to have the opportunity to work with UR Pride, the University of Regina, and the community at large in my new capacity as Executive Director of UR Pride. July marks my first full month of activities with UR Pride in this position, and fittingly, this month has certainly been a busy introduction to life here! We have been hard at work to gear up for Welcome Week/Orientation on campus, as well as revitalizing our educational resources and workshops and prepping ourselves as best we can for September. Friends, let me be the first to say, that these are indeed exciting times, and I couldn’t be happier to be a part of it: Katie, our Summer Student, and Karli, our Project Coordinator, have been wonderful to work with over the course of my adjustment period here, and hey, I think we make a pretty great team.

I suppose that many of you may not yet know who I am: my name is Leah Keiser, and I have been involved with UR Pride in many different capacities over the course of my stay here in Regina. I am originally from Northern MB, love all things art and culture, and have a healthy obsession with sleeping in on weekends. LGBTQ issues, presence, community and activism are things that I am deeply passionate about, and I look forward to the many conversations that I will have with many of you about what inspires you the most in this way.
I can’t say this enough: I am very happy to be here, and look forward to working with you all over the course of my stay here at UR Pride. We have a ton of stuff in the works for this year, so keep your eyes peeled!

If you have any questions, comments, concerns or ideas, please do not hesitate to give us a shout at contactus@urpride.ca or executive.director@urpride.ca,  or pop by the office/lounge for a chat.

With much respect and admiration,

Leah Keiser

Update from UR Pride

A big thanks to the Queen City Pride committee for all of your hard work, we had a great time at Pride 2012!  UR Pride took part in many wonderful events including the flag raising, the new Pride Fair and Community Coffee Night hosted by TransSask and Camp Fyrefly that took place at the Unitarian Centre as well as the Pride Parade which was the biggest Regina has ever seen!

UR Pride has been gearing up for Welcome Week as well as some NEW fall programming in partnership with the Rainbow Wellness Resource Centre. You can also look forward to our weekly Movie Nights which will be held on Monday nights in the UR Pride lounge starting in September.

Queer Youth Group

Thank you to all of the youth that have taken part in our events so far this summer!  We attended many of the wonderful Queen City Pride events, had an arts and crafts night, watched a couple of documentaries and a lovely BBQ in Waterfall Park.  Our next event will be Mini Golf at Paradise Cinemas and Miniature Golf on August 23rd from 7-9.

Queer Youth Group is a safe space for Queer, Questioning and Allied youth between the ages of 14-24.  We meet every Wednesday in the UR Pride lounge (Riddell 225).

If you or anyone you know would like more info about Queer Youth Group visit our page or email youthgroup@urpride.ca

Positive Space Network

Our Positive Space Online Test is now available on the site.  The online test is a substitute for the introductory workshop and once completed we will give you your very own Positive Space magnet to hang in your office or space.  Keep your eyes open for workshop dates this coming September!  For information about the Positive Space Network, click here!

New Website

Our new website is up and running with lots of great info!  We now have all of our pamphlets available in pdf format to download and distribute as well as some helpful websites.  These can be found on the resources page.  We are always looking for more awesome resources so please feel free to let us know (contactus@urpride.ca) about any that we don't have on our page.

Update from the Rainbow Wellness Resource Centre

Pride
Pride was the first introduction many community members had with the RWRC. We accomplished many “firsts” during this week including attending the Community Fair, marching as an organization in the Pride Parade and being mentioned on the CTV Evening News!

The Space
Thanks to the help of the Gay and Lesbian Community of Regina and the  Regal Social Association of Regina, the RWRC drop-in centre is looking fantastic! The drop-in centre will play host for programming and services offered not only by the RWRC, but also by other community organizations such as URPride, Aids Programming South Saskatchewan, Camp fYrefly, TransSask Support Services, and many more.

Programming and Services
We are excited to announce that we have been working on some amazing projects for the upcoming year, alongside a number of community organizations. Here are just a few of the programs that you can look forward to:
  • “Regina’s Queer Community Calendar” will enable organizations in the community to network and collaborate, while keeping the rest of the community informed about upcoming events and opportunities.
  • Open Discussion Groups, hosted alongside URPride, will provide a friendly and open-minded atmosphere, where participants will analyze and decompose a wide range of topics relevant to the LGBTQ2 community.
  •  A Sexual Health Clinic will be offered to the community with the help of Aids Programming South Saskatchewan and Regina Qu’Appelle Health Region.

Fall Open House
The RWRC will be having a Fall Open House on Tuesday, September 25th, 2012, 5 – 7:30 pm. If you have any question regarding what we’re about, this is your chance to come and find out! The evening will get started at 5:00 pm with cocktails and will be followed by a short program at 6:00 pm.

Get Involved!
If you want to volunteer at the RWRC or even just have your name added to our contact list for upcoming events and opportunities, please contact us at (306) 359-RWRC (7972) or rainbow.wellness.rc@gmail.com.

Be sure to check out the media release on August 1st @ 9:30a.m. at the Living Spirit Centre (3018 Doan Drive)

The Regina Public Interest Research Group (RPIRG) and the Saskatchewan Council for International Cooperation (SCIC) are teaming up to offer an amazing training opportunity for young leaders and activists again this summer!

What: 3rd annual Generating Momentum: Activist Leadership Training Camp
When: Thursday, August 23 @ 6:00 p.m. – Sunday, August 26 at 2:00 p.m.
Where: Cedar Lodge in Dundurn (just outside of Saskatoon)
Who: 18 to 29 year olds, passionate about social, global, and environmental justice.
Why: To provide the practical skills, knowledge, education, and networking opportunities necessary to make a difference in your community!
This year, our Generating Momentum workshops and sessions will be focused on developing, supporting, and uniting progressive voices. We are gearing programming towards learning ways that individuals, groups, and movements can operate within (and outside of) current political, economic, and social systems. By understanding how these systems develop, and our roles within them, participants will leave knowing how to work towards positive change!

To register, or for more information, visit the Generating Momentum website: www.generatingmomentum.rpirg.org
Check out this commercial for the camphttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q0XYQdRVbnA
Or find us on facebookhttps://www.facebook.com/events/445818545447983/

Generating Momentum is a great chance to meet the people working on progressive issues and campaigns in Saskatchewan, to participate in training, refine your skills, or learn about issues.  Workshops this year will include anti-oppression training, trade agreements, corporate propaganda, queer theory, alternative media, campaign planning, tools for action, and much more!  Come as part of a group or as an individual.  Registration is $75, and we offer a bursary for the full cost if it is a barrier.

Feel free to contact RPIRG if you have any questions: info@rpirg.org306-337-2420.
