University lecture series examines impact of First World War

Members of the media are invited to attend the September 24 lecture entitled The Impact of the Great War on Films and Comics. This is the first of four lectures planned this fall as part of the series ‘1914: A Turning Point in History and Culture – Centenary Reflections at the University of Regina.’

This commemorative lecture series features an interdisciplinary team of scholars who offer their ‘centenary reflection’ on the significance of the Great War as a turning point in history and culture. Approaching the war from diverse disciplinary perspectives underlines the profound and sometimes surprising impact of the war, as its influence reached from the Berlin streets to the Canadian prairies, from the musical stage to the graphic novel and from the artist’s studio to the psychiatrist’s couch.

The two scholars speaking at the September 24 lecture are:

• Dr. Sylvain Rheault (Department of French) who will examine ‘The Great War as Rupture in Anti-Heroic Comics’
• Dr. Christina Stojanova (Department of Film Studies) who will discuss ‘The Great War and Film Propaganda’
