Due to the generosity of a former Regina resident, William Borden Ingram, dozens of University of Regina students will receive financial support.

Ingram gifted the University of Regina over $1.2 million dollars, the largest estate gift received in the University's history, to endow the William Borden Ingram Award.

"Mr. Ingram devoted his life to serving his community and helping others achieve their goals, so the establishment of this award is entirely in keeping with his character," said University of Regina President Vianne Timmons. "Through this bountiful gift, he has created an award that for decades to come will support students as they prepare to become leaders in their own communities." 

The William Borden Ingram Award will grant undergraduate students $5,750 a year for four years, which, through the course of a degree program, totals $23,000. Two students entering a four-year program in the Faculty of Arts will be chosen annually. 

"This is wonderful news for the Faculty of Arts," said Richard Kleer, dean of the Faculty of Arts. "Students who are under pressure to choose majors that offer a conventional route into the professions may be liberated by the Ingram Award which enables them to pursue their passion for fascinating fields of study such as anthropology, English, history, and philosophy."     

Ingram grew up in Wolseley, Saskatchewan. He attended the Regina College from 1928-29 and completed his degree at the University of Saskatchewan in 1930. Following his service in the Second World War, he worked as an accountant at the Consumers' Co-operative Refineries Limited (CCRL) in Regina for 30 years until his retirement. Ingram was a strong supporter of liberal arts education and believed the purpose of education was to increase the enjoyment of life.
