2019 Saskatchewan Book Awards honour works with U of R connection

The 2019 Saskatchewan Book Awards took place over the weekend, and the University of Regina was well represented. Of the 14 awards handed out on Saturday, April 27, seven had a connection to the U of R. Six awards were given to five works published by the University of Regina Press, and one award was given to a book by a U of R alumnus.
Awarded books published by the University of Regina Press:
- Blackbird Song by Randy Lundy - Saskatchewan Arts Board Poetry Award and the Saskatoon Public Library Indigenous Peoples' Publishing Award
- A Hero for the Americas: The Legend of Gonzalo Guerrero by Robert Calder - Saskatoon Public Library and City of Saskatoon Book Award
- Dissident Knowledge in Higher Education by Dr. Marc Spooner and Dr. James McNinch - SaskBooks Publishing in Education Award
- Antigone Undone: Juliette Binoche, Anne Carson, and the Art of Resistance by Will Aitken - Ministry of Parks, Culture, and Sport Publishing Award
- kisiskâciwan: Indigenous Voices from Where the River Flows Swiftly Edited by Jesse Rae Archibald-Barber - Rasmussen, Rasmussen and Charowsky Indigenous Peoples' Writing Award
Spooner is professor of Education, and McNinch is a retired professor emeritus and former dean of the Faculty of Education. Archibald-Barber is an associate professor of Indigenous literatures at First Nations University of Canada.
One University alumnus was also awarded for his work:
- Thorn-Field by James Trettwer CA'86, CCE'87, CDP'90, BA'97 - City of Regina Book Award

Founded in 1993, the Saskatchewan Book Awards promote and recognize the achievements of the local literary community. The award ceremony is annually attended by more than 1,000 people, and offers valuable exposure for Saskatchewan's authors and publishers.
