Abstract
This system demonstrates the feasibility of recognizing hand gestures by optically measuring the motion of forearm tendons. When a person moves his or her fingers (performs a gesture), there is a corresponding motion in the tendons of the wrist. Infrared sensors placed on the wrist detect this motion; the sensor output is digitized and sent wirelessly to a nearby computer. The computer processes the data and uses pattern recognition techniques to determine the gesture performed (i.e., which fingers the person has moved).
