29th annual spring convocation honours 1,597
Degrees, diplomas and certificates will be presented to 1,597 recipients at the 29th annual University of Regina spring convocation May 28-30 at the Saskatchewan Centre of the Arts. The ceremonies begin at 2 p.m. each day.

Three honorary degrees will also be presented. Dr. Michael Ignatieff will be awarded an honorary doctor of laws degree on May 28, in recognition of his life’s work as historian, journalist, novelist, commentator and academic. The Honourable Judge Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond will receive an honorary doctor of laws degree on May 29, recognizing her contributions to the justice system and society. Dr. Edward Busse, a Saskatchewan cardiovascular and thoracic surgeon, will be presented with an honorary doctorate on May 30 in recognition of his contributions to cardiovascular and thoracic surgery.

Degrees, certificates and diplomas from the faculties of Graduate Studies and Research, Administration, Engineering, and Kinesiology and Health Studies will be presented Wednesday, May 28. Degrees, certificates and diplomas from the faculties of Arts, Fine Arts and Science will be presented Thursday, May 29. Degrees, certificates and diplomas from the faculties of Education, Social Work and Continuing Education will be presented Friday, May 30.

The number of graduates from each faculty is:

  • Administration 223;
  • Arts 275;
  • Continuing Education 188;
  • Education 273;
  • Engineering 108;
  • Fine Arts 60;
  • Graduate Studies and Research 97;
  • Kinesiology and Health Studies 36;
  • Science 184; and,
  • Social Work 153.

There are 1,005 women receiving degrees, diplomas and certificates and 590 men. Students from 17 countries outside Canada will be presented with degrees, diplomas or certificates. The countries include Cameroon, England, Ghana, India, Indonesia, Japan, Mexico, Pakistan, People’s Republic of China, Saudi Arabia, Slovakia, South Korea, Sudan, Thailand, Ukraine, United States and Vietnam.

About 43,000 students have been honoured at convocations since the University of Regina when it became an independent institution in 1974.
