University commits to Indigenous-led policy development

The University of Regina is aware of the growing issue of claims to Indigenous identity by individuals who are unable to verify Indigenous ancestry, citizenship, or nationhood.

Recognizing that Indigenous people see Indigenous identity fraud in the academy as misappropriation of identity and culture, and as a form of ongoing colonialism, we accept the responsibility for immediately implementing effective Indigenous-led policies and processes to intervene and remediate such concerns. 

Developing formal policies and processes, alongside Indigenous leaders, scholars and the national university collective to address the growing issue of claims to Indigenous identity in post-secondary institutions is one of the actions the University is taking towards reconciliation and decolonization.
