With the installation of two 100-tonne “small wheels” that are the last components of the muon spectrometer, the ATLAS detector is now virtually complete – much to the excitement of a University of Regina scientist who has been involved with the project for the better part of a decade.Item Open Access Release: "Comrades, Socialism is Unforgettable!": Paradoxes of Memory in Eastern Europe(External Relations, University of Regina, 2008-02-26) External Relations, University of ReginaAfter the collapse of the Soviet empire in 1991, removing images of communist propaganda from public spaces became one of the most pressing preoccupations in Lithuania and elsewhere in Eastern Europe. Statues of Marx, Lenin, Stalin, and many other proletarian ideologues were toppled by jubilant crowds. People seemed desperate to forget oppressive socialism. Then, in the late 1990s, to the surprise of many, the defaced Soviet-era statues were “remembered”, restored, and put on display at an open-air museum known as Grÿtas Park. Today, the museum’s collection and popularity continue to grow. The event kicks off on May 10 at 10 a.m. in front of the University’s Physical Activity Centre (PAC) and includes events for all ages and athletic abilities. Participants can choose from a 10-kilometre road race (first leg of the Timex Saskatchewan Road Race Series), five-kilometre fun run, rollerblade, wheelchair or rollerski, or a two-kilometre fun walk for families. All participants will receive a souvenir t-shirt.
