Dancing to her own tune -- Doctoral candidate Michelle Gagnon MA’12 is one of this year’s recipients of the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships, one of the most prestigious graduate student awards in the country. New chancellor’s roots run deep -- This spring, Jim Tomkins was elected as the University’s eighth chancellor. It’s just one of the many contributions that Tomkins has made to the University in a career that has spanned almost 45 years. A feverish chapter in the Regina College story -- In December 1920, an outbreak of typhoid fever hit Regina College, the predecessor of the University of Regina. When it was over, eight students and one instructor had died in what is regarded as the darkest hour in the University’s 100-plus year history. Flexible learning not a stretch for today’s students -- Today’s students are increasingly taking classes away from the traditional classroom. One of the largest areas of growth has been online courses. The University of Regina is no exception with online enrolments almost doubling in the past three years. Learning that lasts a lifetime -- Since 1977, the University’s Lifelong Learning Centre has been delivering a diverse collection of non-credit courses that are creative, intellectual and physical. The class of 2013 -- Meet this year’s honorary degree recipients: Frank Flaman, Art Opseth and Linda Rankin BA’68. Community connections -- The Faculty of Art’s Community Research Unit is taking the University’s expertise to Regina communities. Regina’s North Central neighbourhood, once called Canada’s worst neighbourhood in a 2007 Maclean’s magazine article, has been a major focus of the unit’s work. Never lose hope -- In January, alumna Denise Batters BA’91 realized a lifetime ambition when she was appointed to the Canadian Senate by Prime Minister Stephen Harper. Now, Batters is using her national profile to bring awareness to mental health issues like those that led to her husband’s suicide. Drive for five -- Christopher Gbekorbu BA’01, BA(Hons)’01, MA’05, BSC’11 will walk across this year’s spring convocation stage to receive his fifth degree or diploma from the University of Regina. And he has his eyes on a sixth. Now, after spending time outside the country, Anderson has come full circle. He’s back in Saskatchewan this time as president of First Nations University of Canada, the successor of the institution he taught at all those years ago.
